Training & Development Director Position Summary

The Training and Development Director will be responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of our employees within the construction industry. This role requires a strategic thinker with excellent communication and leadership skills, as well as a deep understanding of training methods and techniques to improve knowledge, skills and abilities in leadership, functional competencies, construction processes, and safety protocols. Through internal resources and third party thought leaders, they will develop and implement programs for development of our critical talent pools, spanning across skilled trades development, functional skill development for professional staff, and leadership training at all levels. They will provide critical input to our succession planning discussions across the organization.

Training And Development Director Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Continue to build Lexicon University by developing and implementing comprehensive training programs tailored to the needs of our businesses within Lexicon, including but not limited to project management, technology, leadership, communication and collaboration, construction techniques, skilled trades qualifications and certifications, safety procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Collaborate with department heads and subject matter experts to assess training needs, identify areas for improvement, and build a corresponding talent strategy that supports employees throughout a career within Lexicon. This strategy must address both group needs, as well as individual development plans (IDPs).
  • Develop plans for effective internships as well as both leadership and functional development programs for individuals starting out on their careers, whether they are new to the workforce, or are making a transition from a different career such as veterans, parents re-entering the workforce, and underserved populations.
  • Work with leaders to identify top performers, dissect the learning events and interventions that contributed to their success, and incorporate into internal training programs to build a performance culture.
  • Design training materials, including presentations, manuals, and online resources, to effectively deliver content to employees at all levels. Develop a library of content which includes Lexicon-specific and developed training, as well as instructional materials from third party content, for employees and leaders to leverage.
  • Conduct training sessions in person or virtually, ensuring engagement and understanding among participants.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs through feedback, assessments, and performance metrics, and make necessary adjustments to continuously improve outcomes.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, regulations, and best practices in construction training and incorporate relevant updates into training programs.
  • Manage the training budget, including allocating resources for materials, instructors, and technology as needed.
  • Oversee the onboarding process for new employees, ensuring they receive comprehensive training to succeed in their roles.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external training providers, certification organizations, and educational institutions to supplement internal training efforts.
  • Collaborate with HR and management to identify career development opportunities for employees and support succession planning initiatives.
  • Work closely with operations analysts to collect and coordinate aggregate talent data and translate the data into insights through data analysis that drives deliberate action plans.

Training And Development Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a workplace training and development role within an industrial environment, preferably in the construction industry or heavy manufacturing with exposure to skilled trades internal development.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience facilitating training for the workplace
  • Certifications in training and development, instructional design, or related areas are preferred.
  • Proven track record of designing and delivering effective training programs that improve employee performance and organizational effectiveness across different talent pools, including blue collar, professional and leadership positions, utilizing comprehensive methods including instructional, coaching/mentoring, and job application, and in formats including in person instruction, virtual and e-learning methodologies.
  • Ability to work within the U.S. without company sponsorship, now and in the future.
  • Spoken and written fluency in English is a must; Spanish fluency is a strong asset but not required.

  • Passion for learning and staying current with industry trends and best practices.
  • Proficiency leveraging learning management systems (LMS) and training technology platforms.

Training and Development Director Physical Demands

Must be able to work in a high-pressure working environment with multiple stakeholders and deadlines. Some overtime, weekend work and overnight travel is required. Willingness and ability to meet trainees where they work, which includes production facilities and construction sites. Must be able to sit for long periods of time working directly on a computer. Must be ethical, energetic, and have a passion for delivering solutions.
