The Lead Analytics Data Modeler plays a lead technical and team role in the planning, design, and delivery of modern data analytics and reporting solutions used to build a robust and unified data and information ecosystem that delivers data as a strategic asset. This work resides in the Decision Support Unit within University Information and Technology (UIT). Decision Support contributes to the mission of the university and the strategic efforts of UIT by building and maintaining the central university data environment and enabling people to connect to and understand the data they need to fulfill the core missions of the university. The incumbent reports to the Analytics Manager and is responsible for work related to the planning, design, development, testing, and delivery of accurate, precise, and efficient data models, dashboards, and reports. Their primary role is to advance the data and analytics roadmap. They provide technical leadership and expertise in translating business needs, defining the technical specifications of work, and creating data models and reporting solutions to meet those needs.

As a lead analyst, developer, and content expert, the incumbent works within the priorities set by the IT Strategic Plan, the Data Governance sanctioned and sponsored Analytics Agenda, Portfolio Management Office, and the Decision Support unit to determine and implement appropriate solutions to meet strategic goals. The individual in this position will be responsible for requirements gathering, translating business needs to technical specifications, process improvement, advanced troubleshooting, thorough documentation, and will be accountable for consistently tracking and making progress on both operational and project related work. They will be expected to demonstrate excellent independent-decision making, critical thinking, leadership of peers, and technical expertise in the area of reporting, databases, BI, reporting, analytics, and related skills.

OSU has a complex data environment that includes multiple cloud and on-premise data sources. The Lead Analytics Data Modeler will work across this data landscape to develop, test, validate, and produce data models, data marts, standardized reporting and dashboard products, and develop and document procedures and workflows to expand and modernize the BI and analytics capabilities. The incumbent will work closely with the data engineering team to implement data warehouse and reporting solutions needed to meet the business needs and will contribute to the planning and delivery of modern, efficient data ecosystem.

Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to help advance the analytics practice using data science skills to develop novel insights that expand the capabilities and functionality of this environment as the technical possibilities and business needs change over time.

The individual in this role will need to exhibit advanced skills in programming, statistical analyses, data modeling, data cleaning and preparation, working with databases and source systems, data visualization/reporting tools, and highly effective oral and written interpersonal communication between technical and non-technical audiences. They will work closely with their Decision Support colleagues and also with other IT and non-IT colleagues on specific work efforts and larger strategic projects where the incumbent will provide technical expertise and consultation as appropriate. Their ability to think flexibly and troubleshoot issues, work collaboratively with stakeholders and peers, as well as dive into new technologies and the evolving landscape of this area will be essential for the success in this position.
