Every year more than half a million abused and neglected children are in need of safe, permanent, nurturing homes.

That's where CASA steps in. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was created in 1977 to make sure the abuse and neglect these children originally suffered at home doesn't continue as abuse and neglect at the hands of the system. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. The result is that a child has an individual advocate to speak for them in court.

It is the CASA vision to provide a volunteer for each and every abused and neglected child who needs one.

This New Year, make a new kind of resolution - resolve to speak up for a vulnerable child in foster care.

CASA volunteers are compassionate, dedicated community members from all backgrounds who believe that every child deserves someone to speak up for them. CASA volunteers are partnered with a child or group of siblings, spend time with the child/children, gather information about his or her needs from the family, caretakers, teachers, doctors, and caseworkers, and make informed recommendations to the family court about the child’s future. The role of a CASA volunteer is simple to advocate for whatever is in the best interest of the child/children.

Volunteers do not need any specific background, training, or education to become a CASA; all training and resources are provided through 36 hours of pre-service training and ongoing continuing education.
