Gear Box Mechanic

Function
❑ Responsible for complete build up, tear down, modification, rework and troubleshooting of all gear
boxes and related assemblies and accessories. Direct and instruct one or two mechanics as
workload requires.
Typical Responsibilities
❑ Work from assembly drawings, engineering instructions, check sheets and other written or oral
instructions to plan operational sequence and assembly methods, and to incorporate changes.
❑ Assemble major components to build complete gear box install various external parts and
accessories.
❑ Replace or match parts to insure that parts are properly fitted, mated and aligned.
❑ Fit and align bearings, shafts, bushings and other component parts.
❑ Press fit parts such as bushings, gears onto shafts, etc., heating and freezing mating details when
required.
❑ Tighten all studs and nuts to proper torque and safety wire.
❑ Use power and hand tools to drill, ream, tap, burr, lap, file, polish, change studs, insert helicoils,
make shims and fittings, etc., as required for assembly and rework operations.
❑ Take gear patterns and mounting distance, check and adjust backlash and end clearance of gears.
❑ Use a variety of precision measuring instruments, and gages such as plug, depth and feeler gages,
dial indicators, micrometers, etc.
❑ As needed make up simple tools and "shop aids" to facilitate assembly.
❑ Direct and instruct one or two assemblers as workload requires.
❑ Check completed assemblies for incorporation of all modifications and conformance to all
specifications.
❑ Review and interpret related paperwork to assure proper identification of parts and operations, and
record appropriate dispositions.
❑ Perform other related duties as directed.
❑ Perform operator checklist as required.
❑ Contribute to the overall effectiveness of equipment by performing operator required upkeep.
❑ Follow all rules and regulations pertaining to environmental health and safety.
❑ Segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.
❑ Refer only unusual conditions to Working Leader or supervisor.
