A Day in the Life of a Meals on Wheels Driver at RW Solutions:
- Start your shift by reporting to our headquarter office in New Britain, CT to pick up the delivery route from your supervisor; which includes a list of addresses and special notes for each stop.
- Package the meals needed for the delivery route - making sure everything is packed securely and ready for safe transport.
- Use our Meals on Wheels van to deliver meals with care—knock, greet warmly, hand off the food, and check in with the person. You might be the only friendly face they see all day.
- Be a source of comfort and connection. You’re trained to spot any concerns and communicate them back to your team.
- Stay in touch with your coordinator for updates or if anything unexpected comes up during your route.
- Wrap up the day by returning containers, reporting any issues, and completing delivery records.
What You’ll Need
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Experience as a delivery driver (e.g., food, packages, ride-share)
- Experience working in a customer service related position.
- Familiarity with smartphones, GPS apps, or route tracking tools
- Understanding of food safety practices or willingness to learn
- Friendly, patient, and compassionate communication style
- Ability to stick to a delivery schedule and manage time independently
- Maintain professionalism even in challenging or repetitive situations
- You’ll go home each day knowing you helped someone stay nourished and connected.

- Gain experience in social services, senior care, and community outreach.
- Must be able to lift and carry insulated meal bags, coolers, and supplies weighing up to 25 lbs, multiple times per shift.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, and climbing stairs while delivering meals to homes or apartments.
- Ability to safely operate a vehicle for extended periods (up to several hours per day), often getting in and out of the vehicle repeatedly during a shift.
- Use of hands and arms for loading meals, handling food containers, and operating vehicle controls.
- Must be comfortable driving and walking in a variety of weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, and cold.
- Will enter a range of home settings that may include: stairs or uneven walkways, pets, varying levels of cleanliness or clutter, and possible exposure to secondhand smoke, strong odors, or allergens.
- Occasionally exposed to traffic noise, GPS instructions, or other interruptions while on the road.
- May interact with clients who are lonely, ill, or in distress. Must be comfortable offering empathy while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
