Managing Director - Investigations
About the Role
NAXO is a technical investigations firm working across blockchain, cybersecurity, and the dark web in support of litigation teams, large organizations, and law enforcement. We are seeking an investigations manager to direct complex matters and lead technical teams toward clear, defensible findings.
This role requires technical fluency, but not necessarily a technical background. The ideal candidate may be a technologist, investigator, attorney, or former prosecutor with experience leading complex technical investigations.
You must understand unfamiliar technologies well enough to ask the right questions, translate investigative or legal objectives into technical work, and judge whether that work advances the investigation. You will own the substance and direction of investigations, from challenging assumptions and shaping work product, to ensuring the right work is being done efficiently.
What You Will Do
- Manage complex investigations and litigation-support matters from inbound leads through reporting findings.
- Translate investigative, legal, and evidentiary objectives into clear technical scopes and deliverables.
- Direct technologists, blockchain analysts, forensic examiners, and other specialists to achieve investigative objectives.
- Manage scope, staffing, priorities, deadlines, budgets, documentation, and client expectations.
- Test investigative hypotheses, identify evidentiary gaps and competing explanations, and change direction when warranted.
- Explain complex findings clearly to attorneys, investigators, executives, courts, and other non-technical audiences.
- Ensure methods and conclusions are documented and can withstand adversarial scrutiny.
- Perform hands-on investigative or technical analysis where qualified to do so.
Requirements
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience leading complex technical investigations in government, litigation, cybersecurity, digital forensics, consulting, law enforcement, intelligence, or related work.
- Technical fluency: the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies, challenge assumptions, and evaluate conclusions. An engineering background is nice-to-have, but not required.
- Ability to work with technical specialists, knowing when to defer to expertise and when to push back.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information from multiple sources.
- Experience translating broad questions into investigative plans and concrete steps.
- Organizational skills to keep specialists and workstreams focused on a common objective.
- Sound judgment with confidential information, privileged materials, evidence, and sensitive legal or reputational matters.
Preferred Experience
- Cybercrime investigations, including incident response, threat intelligence, network analysis, and security engineering.
- Digital forensics involving computers, mobile devices, cloud platforms, networks, source code, or other digital evidence.
- Dark web investigations, anonymous communications, open-source intelligence, financial investigations, or complex fraud.
- Blockchain analysis, cryptocurrency tracing, attribution, asset tracing, smart contracts, or use of blockchain analytics platforms.
- Working directly with federal, state, or local law enforcement.
- Assessing expert work, preparing experts for testimony, or examining technical witnesses.
- Hands-on skills in Python, SQL, data analysis, forensic tools, blockchain analytics, or related areas.
