General Description

The Network Engineer performs advanced technical and professional work in the planning, design, implementation, and management of network and security solutions. This role also contributes to project management efforts across network initiatives. Working under the general supervision of the Network Services Manager, the Network Engineer is responsible for designing, deploying, maintaining, and optimizing the organization’s network infrastructure to ensure reliability, performance, and security.

Duties And Responsibilities

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Plan, design, install, configure, and maintain network hardware, software, and related technologies.
  • Monitor network performance, availability, and security; identify and resolve issues proactively.
  • Lead network-related projects, including upgrades, expansions, and new technology deployments.
  • Develop and maintain network documentation, diagrams, standards, and procedures.
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and service providers as needed.
  • Maintain high levels of network security through access controls, firewall management, patching, and monitoring.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that improve reliability, performance, and security.
  • Manage Enterprise Network Management tool.
  • Manages project to implement and/or enhance local and wide area network infrastructure.
  • Performs related tasks are required

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

    • Strong knowledge of networking concepts, including routing, switching, VLANs, network protocols, and wireless technologies.
    • Extensive Routers and Switch experience, specific to Cisco and Nexus hardware (troubleshooting and installation)
    • Ability to manage Firewalls (Cisco or Palo Alto);
    • Ability to work independently or as a team member to identify requirements, find and evaluate alternatives, present solutions, make recommendations and follow projects through to completion;
    • Ability to take initiative and use creative and innovative thinking to find solutions to business problems;
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with users, peers and department officials;
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

    Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

    Requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, supplemented by 5 years of demonstrated ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot local and wide area networks. Project Management and leadership experience is desired. Technical certification is highly desirable.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • CCNA or CCNP
