Senior Mechanical Engineer - P.E. Required

Hybrid (4 days a week in office, WFH Fridays) - Kansas City, MO

Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer (P.E. required) with deep experience in power generation and industrial facilities to lead mechanical systems design, equipment selection, and field execution for medium to large capital projects. The role combines advanced technical design, discipline leadership, and hands-on support through construction and commissioning. The ideal candidate will be proficient in mechanical engineering fundamentals, applicable codes and standards, and AutoCAD Plant 3D modeling, and will mentor junior engineers while ensuring safe, costeffective, and codecompliant project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical engineering design for power generation and industrial facilities projects, including steam, condensate, cooling, compressed air, fuel handling, and ancillary mechanical systems.
  • Prepare and review mechanical calculations, equipment specifications, datasheets, and material takeoffs to support design and procurement.
  • Develop and review detailed mechanical drawings and 3D models using AutoCAD Plant 3D; produce fabrication and installation drawings, isometrics, and piping layouts.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API, ANSI, NFPA, national and local plumbing and mechanical codes) and site-specific requirements.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, electrical, controls, process) and with clients, vendors, and contractors to resolve technical issues and maintain project schedule and budget.
  • Perform equipment selection and vendor evaluation for pumps, heat exchangers, turbines, pressure vessels, valves, and rotating equipment; review vendor submittals and FAT documentation.
  • Conduct constructability reviews, support field engineering, provide site supervision during installation, and assist with commissioning and startup activities.
  • Provide engineering leadership and mentorship to junior staff, including technical reviews, training, and performance feedback; promote continuous improvement and engineering best practices.
  • Develop cost estimates and scope of work for proposals, change orders, and project execution plans; participate in project meetings and report on technical progress and risks.
  • Lead failure analysis, root cause investigations, and implementation of corrective actions for mechanical systems as needed.
  • Maintain professional engineering standards and prepare stamped calculations and drawings as required by jurisdictional requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
  • 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience, with a strong background in power generation and/or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D for 3D modeling, piping isometrics, and drawing production
  • Proficiency in other CAD/CAE tools (e.g., Revit MEP, PDMS, ANSYS) a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical codes and standards (ASME, API, ANSI, piping codes)
  • Experience with rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, turbines), heat transfer equipment (heat exchangers, boilers), pressure vessels, and piping systems.
  • Proven ability to lead engineering teams, manage multidisciplinary coordination, and communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and vendors.
  • Experience supporting construction and commissioning activities, including site visits and field troubleshooting.
  • Excellent technical writing, problem-solving, and analytical skills; ability to produce clear, stampready calculations and documents.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as required and to support occasional extended field assignments.
