Job Description

Zachry Group is seeking a Mechanical Engineer I to join our Engineering Design Center in Charlotte, NC. This position offers an exciting opportunity for motivated engineers, ranging from recent graduates to early-career professionals, to contribute to the design and execution of complex power generation, energy, and heavy industrial projects.

The Mechanical Engineer I will support the planning, design, procurement, installation, and performance of mechanical systems and equipment throughout the project lifecycle. Working alongside experienced engineering professionals, this role provides exposure to multidisciplinary engineering teams, advanced design technologies, and industry-leading projects while fostering technical growth and professional development.

Responsibilities

• Support the design, analysis, and development of mechanical systems and equipment for industrial, energy, and power generation facilities.
• Execute project-specific engineering tasks under the guidance of senior engineers while meeting project schedules, quality standards, and client requirements.
• Interpret and review engineering drawings, specifications, schematics, technical reports, and vendor documentation.
• Assist in the development of equipment, piping, and mechanical system designs using CAD and 3D modeling software.
• Perform engineering calculations, technical evaluations, and feasibility studies to support design decisions.
• Research, evaluate, and apply engineering principles to develop reliable, efficient, and cost-effective mechanical solutions.
• Develop and test alternative design concepts to improve performance, constructability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
• Assist with equipment specifications, material requisitions, and procurement support activities.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure effective project execution and integration across disciplines.
• Participate in design reviews and provide technical recommendations to improve system reliability and performance.
• Investigate equipment issues, analyze failures, and recommend corrective actions and design improvements.
• Support installation, commissioning, field verification, and troubleshooting activities at project and operating sites as required.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, engineering best practices, and knowledge-sharing efforts.
• Present technical information and recommendations to project teams, clients, and other stakeholders as needed.
  
  
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
• Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and their practical application in industrial systems and equipment.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Ability to evaluate technical challenges and develop effective engineering solutions.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail with a commitment to quality and accuracy.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and engineering software tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related field
• FE and PE or willingness to obtain both
• Energy and Chemical and/or Power Design Engineering Experience
