Assistant Sustainability Specialist - Environmental Services (Denver)

Description

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Sustainability Specialist to join our growing team. This entry-level position is designed for an early career professional with an interest in sustainable design and construction. Working alongside experienced sustainability professionals, this role will support project teams throughout design and construction by assisting with sustainable strategies, certification documentation, technical analysis, and project coordination.

Key Responsibilities

• Support third-party certifications and other sustainable design elements from project inception through construction completion.
• Assist with reviews of building drawings and specifications for alignment with project sustainability goals and certification requirements.
• Support sustainability specialists in providing guidance to design, engineering, and construction teams.
• Track, organize, and prepare design and construction documentation for LEED and other certification programs, such as Envision, WELL, Fitwel, and Living Building Challenge.
• Assist with LEED construction administration activities, including reviewing submittals, tracking documentation, preparing educational materials, participating in meetings, and documenting construction activities.
• Perform research and technical analysis related to sustainable design strategies, building performance, materials, and emerging technologies.
• Support building energy modeling and other building performance analyses under the guidance of experienced team members.
• Maintain project trackers, meeting notes, action items, and certification documentation.
• Participate in internal quality control reviews and incorporate feedback into project deliverables.
• Stay current on evolving green building standards, materials, and technologies and share relevant information with project teams.
• Participate in meetings with clients, project teams, and other stakeholders to support sustainability discussions and project goals.
• Assist project teams with research and documentation related to state and local sustainability regulations.
• Assist with compliance with company and site safety policies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Sustainability, Building Science, Environmental Science, or related field from an accredited program required.
• Coursework, academic projects, internships, or other experience related to sustainable design, green building, building science, building energy modeling, or construction strongly preferred.
• Internship or academic experience supporting LEED or other third-party certification programs preferred.
• Familiarity with sustainable construction practices, materials, and technologies preferred.
• Experience presenting technical information through academic, internship, or professional settings preferred.
• Basic ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings strongly preferred.
• Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
• Basic knowledge of environment/sustainable business practices, regulatory/statutory dynamics, and current trends in the profession.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad assignments and devise new approaches to problems encountered.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multiple technical disciplines.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and respond to feedback.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with energy modeling software such as EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, IESVE, eQUEST, TRACE 3D Plus, or similar tools preferred.
• LEED Green Associate credential or interest in obtaining the credential preferred.
• Experience with embodied carbon analysis and OneClick LCA, EC3, or similar tools preferred.
• Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
  
  

Compensation

$60,000.00-95,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
