The Information Technology Services (ITS) Department is seeking a Network Engineer to join the Infrastructure Division to support and maintain the mission critical network infrastructure of the Regional Wireless Cooperative (RWC). The RWC is a multi agency public safety communications cooperative whose members fund and share access to a highly resilient system supporting police, fire, federal, tribal, and regional partners. Currently, the RWC includes the 700 MHz P25 system, the Fire Hazard Zone VHF system, and a robust transport/backhaul environment engineered for full redundancy and 99.999% uptime. The network supports more than 19,000 member radios and over 20,000 interoperability partners, including agencies such as the DEA, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, Customs and Border Protection, and multiple municipal jurisdictions.

This Network Engineer (RWC) role focuses on sustaining the Layer 3 Virtual Private Network services that enable reliable transport for public safety radio communications and select municipal and enterprise customers. The Network Engineer will assist with configuring, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining mission critical network infrastructure built primarily on Juniper platforms.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Supporting daily network operations.
  • Responding to and resolving network incidents.
  • Assisting with system upgrades.
  • Participating in field installations and site activations across the cooperative's facilities.

The Network Engineer (RWC) works under the guidance of the Lead Network Engineer (RWC) and will engage with a diverse set of partner agencies within the cooperative. The role offers significant opportunities for professional growth within a high availability environment, and requires participation in an on call rotation, which may include nights, weekends, evenings, early mornings, and holidays as needed.

Telework Work Eligibility, Conditions, And Requirements

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule of up to two days per week after the first 90 days of employment, contingent upon performance, attendance, workload, and approval from the supervisor.
  • The role requires flexibility to attend in person meetings or trainings at a designated City work location as operational needs arise. This may include midday, or same day requests to report onsite as operational needs arise.
    • Please note: Preference will be given to candidates residing locally or within the state of Arizona; however candidates willing to relocate by the time of hire are also encouraged to apply.
IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Strong understanding of routing and switching fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS).
  • Ability to troubleshoot network uses at Layers 1 through 3 with guidance.
  • Interest in developing advanced network engineering skills.
  • Willingness to participate in field work and site installations.
  • Strong problem solving and learning mindset.
  • Reliable and detail oriented.
  • Comfortable working in a mission-critical environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

SALARY

Pay Range: $86,153.60 to $121,243.20 annually.

Hiring Range: $86,153.60 to $115,460.80 annually.

  • Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years of responsible experience in network infrastructure production environment.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • This position is subject to Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) background standards. Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate's suitability for the job.
  • This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus;

  • Experience with/in:
    • Configuring, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining network infrastructure using Juniper equipment or equivalent Cisco platforms.
    • Diagnosing live network outages or performance issues in a live environment.
    • Collaborating with public safety networks and sworn personnel.
  • Juniper JNCA, Cisco CCNA, or higher-level certifications.
