Summary Description
Under direction, performs specialized and responsible work involving system-wide efforts to mitigate climate change impacts and increase systemwide environmental sustainability awareness and action, in support of Board Policy, ECA, Sustainability. Works directly with schools and offices by building relationships that promote culture change in schools and offices to increase student and staff engagement and active participation in programs, including: reducing energy and water use, minimizing solid waste generation, and increasing other local and systemwide conservation and resiliency programs. Projects include supporting the formation of local school-based teams to pursue and maintain Maryland Green Schools certification and other projects that demonstrate responsible use of natural resources and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction. The sustainability specialist conducts site visits, leads programs, makes presentations, collects and analyzes data, and reviews building utility, energy and other data, and shares the data in support of continuous improvement. Physical Demands: Requires walking or standing for long periods; lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds; climbing stairs, bending, reaching, holding, grasping, and turning objects; and ability to operate the computer. Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding. Special Requirements: Frequent evening and occasional weekend work is required.

Knowledge Skills Abilities
Knowledge of basic operation of heating, cooling, ventilation and water systems; facilities operations and maintenance; energy optimization, and operational conservation strategies suitable for K-12 buildings; waste reduction strategies including recycling, composting, and food recovery programs; Maryland Green Schools (MDGS) certification program; implementing successful and effective programs at various school levels; current and emerging trends in green building technologies and climate change mitigation strategies. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS). Skilled in basic project management and leadership skills; composing letters, memos, and emails and providing basic assistance that motivate, encourage appropriate behaviors, recruit, and support schools in conservation and waste reduction strategies, and MDGS certification. Skilled in developing presentations and printed materials using Power Point, Google Slides, or other platforms that are appropriate for specific audiences and conduct presentations to various audiences; using computer software and vendors^ customized web-based platforms to monitor waste and energy use; and analyzing data, troubleshooting and resolving hurdles that prevent individual schools from achieving success. Ability to work in a high-visibility, fast-paced environment; engage students and staff in schools to implement comprehensive school-based sustainability programs; review Building Automation Systems and real-time interfaces to analyze data and detect waste, such as interfaces to determine space temperatures or systems to verify schedules and equipment status; and learn and use various new software programs (i.e. Asset Essentials to create and research work requests). Ability to engage with various levels of staff and students across integrated ^green programs^ enhancing operations, promoting existing curriculum, supporting systemwide sustainability efforts and contribute to team developing new projects that meet overall systemwide goals; plan grade-level appropriate activities, that meet the scope and constraints of the requestor and promote the division�s programs; and meet the needs of a diverse student population in a public education environment across grades K through 12 by equitably supporting schools and providing resources.
Education Training Experience
High School or GED diploma required with considerable experience in conservation or sustainability programs. Bachelor^s degree preferred, with coursework focusing on environmental areas, including climate change, sustainability, GHG reduction, or equivalent professional experience with a strong focus on data analysis and energy use reduction. Experience promoting conservation programs (i.e. energy and natural resources, resiliency, minimizing human impact waste reduction), green building features, and other related practices. Experience in marketing, building relationships and developing standard practices to encourage participation is required. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Class C Maryland Driver�s License or equivalent.
