Overview

The Stryten factory in Salina, Kansas is one of the largest lead-acid battery manufacturing sites in North America with 800 employees capable of producing more than 35,000 quality batteries per day. These batteries can be found in your car, in your boat or RV, or, in your lawn and garden equipment. Stryten proudly supports the local community by regularly participating in Project Salina, the Salvation Army Angel Tree program, and providing more than 100 volunteers for the Smoky Hill River Festival.

The Environmental Supervisor is responsible for leading environmental compliance and sustainability activities within the facility. This role ensures full compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations while minimizing risk, preventing incidents, and promoting a culture of environmental stewardship.

The Environmental Supervisor directly supervises Environmental Maintenance Technicians and Environmental Control Technicians and is responsible for implementing environmental programs that protect employees, the community, and the environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations, including EPA, KDHE, and local requirements.
  • Lead and maintain programs related to:
    • Air emissions control and reporting
    • Industrial wastewater treatment, monitoring, and discharge compliance
    • Hazardous and non-hazardous waste management
    • Chemical management and reporting under TSCA and EPCRA
    • Prepare, review, and submit required environmental reports and documentation accurately and on time.
    • Ensure proper recordkeeping and documentation for all environmental programs.
    • Support monitoring and maintaining the wastewater treatment system and conduct various facility inspections to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
    • Oversee operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the wastewater treatment system.
    • Monitor environmental control equipment performance and ensure proper functionality.
    • Troubleshoot and coordinate repairs to environmental systems and equipment.
    • Perform and oversee maintenance on environmental equipment, including pumps, piping systems, and air control systems (e.g., baghouses).
    • Ensure preventive maintenance (PM) activities are completed and properly documented in the work order system.
    • Coordinate equipment downtime with production teams for maintenance and repairs.
    • Partner with external contractors for specialized repairs and improvements.
    • Conduct routine facility inspections and internal audits to ensure environmental compliance.
    • Supervise, coach, and develop Environmental Technicians.
    • Provide environmental training to employees and leaders, including hazardous waste management.
    • Ensure required hazardous waste training is completed within regulatory timelines and refreshed annually.
    • Maintain training records and ensure compliance with regulatory training requirements.
    • Perform other duties as assigned to support business needs.

    Qualifications

    Education, Experience, Certifications

    • High School Diploma or GED; (Preferred) Bachelor's Degree in Environmental or Safety Science
    • 3+ years of EHS experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment (preferred)
    • Experience with environmental compliance, wastewater systems, or hazardous waste management strongly preferred

    Competencies, Skills, Knowledge

    • Well-developed written and oral communication skills.
    • Knowledge of ISO14001, EHS Laws and Regulations.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
    • Proficiency with computer systems and maintenance/work order software

    Environment & Physical Demands

    • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, twist, push, and pull for extended periods (including 12-hour shifts)
    • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
    • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, safety glasses, gloves, hard hat, and metatarsal footwear
    • Exposure to industrial environments, including heat, cold, humidity, noise, and dust
