Sr. Network Engineer

Key Responsibilities

Network Operations & Support

  • Support and maintain corporate and field network environments across:
    • Railroad offices, terminals, shops, and yards
    • Remote and mobile locations supporting rail operations
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity issues impacting operational systems, dispatching, safety, and business functions.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex network incidents and outages.
Cisco ISE & Network Access Control

  • Administer and support Cisco ISE for:
    • User and device authentication (RADIUS/TACACS+)
    • Wired and wireless access control
    • Integration with Active Directory and security policies
  • Troubleshoot access issues affecting office staff, field devices, and railroad operational systems.
Cisco Umbrella & Network Security

  • Manage Cisco Umbrella DNS-layer security policies to protect users and devices from malicious or unauthorized internet activity.
  • Work with the Security team to:
    • Review alerts and reports
    • Adjust policies to balance security with railroad operational needs
  • Support roaming users and remote locations using Umbrella-based protection.
Fiber & Physical Network Infrastructure

  • Support and coordinate fiber and structured cabling infrastructure across railroad facilities, including:
    • MDF/IDF closets at yards, terminals, and offices
    • Patch panels, switches, cabling documentation, and labeling
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors for fiber installs, repairs, and testing.
  • Ensure facilities meet basic network standards for uptime and safety.
Azure & Hybrid Connectivity

  • Support networking components related to Azure-hosted applications and services, including:
    • Site-to-site VPNs
    • Secure connectivity between on-prem locations and Azure
  • Assist with troubleshooting connectivity issues affecting cloud-based railroad systems.
Cradlepoint & Cellular Connectivity

  • Deploy, configure, and support Cradlepoint LTE/5G devices used for:
    • Remote sites
    • Temporary locations
    • Backup connectivity for critical railroad operations
  • Monitor connectivity, performance, and reliability of cellular network solutions.
Vendor Support & Cisco SmartNet

  • Manage vendor relationships and support cases for network equipment.
  • Open and coordinate Cisco SmartNet tickets, hardware replacements (RMA), and support escalations.
  • Assist with hardware lifecycle planning and refresh coordination.

Documentation & Standards

  • Maintain clear, practical documentation including:
    • Network diagrams
    • IP address tracking
    • Site connectivity details
    • Basic troubleshooting and support procedures
  • Follow and contribute to change management practices to minimize operational risk.
Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with:
    • IT Infrastructure
    • Cybersecurity
    • Field Operations
    • Railroad leadership and site contacts
  • Mentor junior team members and provide guidance on standard network practices.
  • Communicate clearly during outages or changes that impact railroad operations.
Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience supporting enterprise network environments.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Cisco ISE
    • Cisco Umbrella
    • Cisco SmartNet support processes
    • Fiber and wired network infrastructure
    • Azure networking (basic to intermediate)
    • Cradlepoint or cellular WAN devices
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in real-world operational environments.
  • Ability to support business-critical systems where uptime and safety are priorities.
  • Comfortable working with vendors, contractors, and internal teams.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting industrial, transportation, railroad, or field operations environments.
  • Cisco and/or Azure certifications (or equivalent experience).
  • Familiarity with:
    • Remote site networking
    • Backup and failover connectivity
    • ITIL or structured IT support practices
