Job Description And Duties
The Agricultural and Prescribed Burn Support (APBS) Section within the Modeling and Meteorology Branch (MMB) is responsible for implementing the state's smoke management program, conducting daily burn declaration forecasts for air districts, daily coordination with districts, land management agencies, and burners on prescribed fire/smoke issues around the state, as well as providing support for the development and maintenance of the Prescribed Fire Information and Reporting System (PFIRS) and the Fire and Exceptional-Event Assessment, Screening, and Toolkit (FEAST).
The SAPS will work directly for the MMB Branch Chief and serve as a technical backstop around smoke issues for other state and federal agencies, land managers, burners, and air districts. They will work with air districts, land management agencies, and burners to facilitate the planning and implementation of more frequent and larger prescribed fires in a manner and timing that minimizes smoke impacts on communities. In addition, they will provide training and support to air districts on how larger, more frequent prescribed burns can be conducted while protecting public health and will provide modeling/operational expertise on how to model smoke emissions and transport to support large burns.
