This role is ideal for a seasoned healthcare data scientist with a proven track record in machine learning, causal inference, and large-scale claims data analysis, who thrives in academic, policy, and collaborative environments.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Collaborate with teams (faculty, residents, students) in designing and executing data-driven surgery outcome research.
- Develop strategic roadmaps for AI/ML applications in health economics, payment reform, and care delivery models.
- Translate complex data into actionable outcomes for clinical researchers
- Apply supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques, survival analysis, and causal inference to healthcare datasets.
- Become a leader in the use of machine learning in Surgery
- Architect robust data pipelines integrating Medicare, commercial claims, and hospital discharge datasets.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, DUAs, and institutional governance standards.
- Maintain reproducible research environments using GitHub, and endure data is always secure (utilize Brown University Health IT policies)
- Author peer-reviewed studies and policy briefs on surgery outcomes
- Present findings at national conferences and contribute to legislative advocacy through data-backed recommendations.
- Design and teach members of the department of surgery in healthcare data science, visualization, and AI ethics.
- Mentor junior analysts, students, and fellows in research design, coding, and publication development.
- M.Sc. in Analytics, Data Science, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in healthcare data science
- Expertise in languages such as R, Python, SQL, SAS, STATA;
- Deep familiarity with CMS, HCUP, HCCI, NSQIP, and other healthcare datasets.
- Strong publication record in top-tier journals and experience with patent filings.
- Ability to navigate and obtain IRB or similar approvals
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience in academic research centers or public health institutions.
- Demonstrated success in securing grants or leading funded research.
- Passion for ethical AI, health equity, and data governance.
