The California Lottery is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise headquartered in Sacramento. It is one of the few state agencies that is a revenue generator, not accepting taxpayer dollars from the state’s general fund. Our mission is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. Ninety-five cents of every dollar spent by players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retailer compensation.
In fiscal year 2023-24, the California Lottery provided over $2 billion in supplemental funding for California public schools, bringing the total contributions to more than $46 billion since we began in 1985. Lottery products are sold at more than 23,000 retail locations throughout the state. Product offerings include an average of 52 fun and entertaining Scratchers games and several draw games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, and SuperLotto Plus and daily games such as Fantasy 5 and Hot Spot.
Job Description and Duties:
Under general direction of the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) Infrastructure Services Information Technology (IT) Manager I, the Senior Infrastructure Systems Engineer serves as an advanced level professional with exceptional knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of storage, backup/data protection, cloud, and virtualization within the California State Lottery’s (Lottery) infrastructure. The Senior Infrastructure Systems Engineer works independently in effectively securing data center resources through proper channels within the Lottery while developing and managing the large and complex storage, backup/data protection, and virtualized systems. The duties for this position are focused in the System Engineering and Information Technology (IT) Project Management domains; however, work may be assigned in other domains as needed.

This position is headquartered in Sacramento and is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule. Employees must be able to report to their assigned headquarters office as assigned. Travel expense to and from the assigned headquarters are the responsibility of the employee. Eligibility for telework requires the employee to reside in California per California Government Code Section 14200 which states: “telecommuting means the partial or total substitution of computers or telecommunication technologies, or both, for the commute to work by employees residing in California.

Working Conditions
The Senior Infrastructure Systems Engineer will work in a fast-paced environment, with competing priorities, and critical deliverables.
- Schedule: This position supports the Lottery during normal business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. unless otherwise approved by the unit manager. Weekends, long and/or irregular hours, after-hours work, and holiday work may be required.
- Travel: Statewide overnight travel may be required.
- Other: This position may be required to carry a Lottery issued cell phone. This position may be required to be reachable outside of normal business hours.
Desirable Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of Windows Server, including Active Directory, Group Policy, and Server Patching.
- Proficient in managing VMware vSphere environments, including ESXi hosts, vCenter, VM provisioning, snapshots, and resource optimization.
- Hands-on experience with hardware maintenance, RAID configurations, firmware updates, and server lifecycle management.
- Skilled in Azure AD, Azure VMs, storage accounts, networking, and hybrid cloud setups.
- Experience with enterprise backup solutions (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Veritas) and disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution.
- Proficient in administering Microsoft 365 services such as Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint Online.
- Strong analytical skills for diagnosing and resolving issues across on-prem, virtual, and cloud environments.
- Experience with PowerShell or other scripting tools for automating administrative tasks across Windows Server, Microsoft 365, and Azure environments.
