Senior Technology Manager, AI & ML

Richmond, VA or Plano, TX • Hybrid

CarMax is hiring a Senior Technology Manager to lead two high-impact AI/ML teams: one focused on accelerating Generative AI adoption across the business, and the other dedicated to predictive modelling that guides customers through their buying journey. This role sits at the intersection of engineering leadership, enterprise AI strategy, and large-scale cloud system delivery.

You’ll drive the roadmap, influence senior stakeholders, and shape how MarMax builds and deploys machine learning capabilities at scale.

What you’ll be doing

• Own multiple AI/ML engineering portfolios and define long-term strategy and standards
• Lead managers and their engineering teams across Generative AI and customer journey modelling
• Identify new AI/ML opportunities and partner with leaders across Data Science, Ops, Security, Legal, and Technology
• Guide delivery of resilient, scalable machine-learning services across the enterprise
• Communicate progress and strategy to senior leadership
• Manage budgets, capacity planning, and resource allocation
• Build an inclusive, engaging culture across remote and hybrid engineers
• Support on-call escalations for high-impact ML applications
• Stay ahead of industry trends and ensure best-in-class AI/ML practices

What you’ll need

• Bachelor’s in CS, Engineering or related field (Master’s welcomed)
• 10+ years of software engineering experience (enterprise-level)
• 5+ years managing managers and technical teams
• Strong background in ML/AI, cloud engineering, and microservices architecture
• Experience delivering scalable services in production environments
• 5+ years building enterprise solutions on Azure
• Proficient in Python, shell scripting, CI/CD, DevOps practices
• Experience with MLFlow, Azure ML, Kubernetes, Docker
• Strong cross-functional communication and stakeholder management

Nice to have

• Experience deploying large-scale systems on Azure
• MLOps expertise and knowledge of standard ML libraries
• Experience with Azure Cognitive Services
• Deep learning, NLP, reinforcement learning exposure
• Experience using LLMs for semantic search or chatbot workflows
• Background in C# or Java
