Controller
Position Summary
Our client is a small non profit that is looking to bring on a new Controller. This position will report to the Executive Director and oversee a small team of two. This is a great role for someone who is looking to grow from a Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager or Assistant Controller role. We are seeking candidates with the following experience:
Position Overview
The Controller is responsible for the overall financial health and operational stability of organization. This hands-on leadership role oversees all accounting and finance functions, provides fiscal management and reporting to senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
The ideal candidate is a mission-driven professional with strong accounting expertise, proven leadership ability, and a collaborative approach to managing people and systems within a nonprofit environment.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Finance
- Direct and oversee all day-to-day financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare, assist and monitor the organization’s annual budget and multi-year forecasts in collaboration with the Executive Director and program leaders.
- Manage cash flow, financial reporting, and forecasting to ensure adequate liquidity and fiscal discipline.
- Produce monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and analyses for management and the Board of Directors.
- Oversee the year-end close, annual audit, and tax filings (Form 990).
- Maintain compliance with GAAP and all nonprofit accounting and grant reporting standards.
- Provide guidance and training to program managers regarding budgets, grant allocations, and financial reporting.
Leadership & Administration
- Serve as the primary liaison to the Board Finance Committee, providing clear financial analysis and reporting.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and leadership team to support organizational planning and strategic initiatives.
- Contribute to organizational policy development to enhance operational excellence and sustainability.
Position Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required, Masters degree a plus
- Minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit accounting, finance, or administration.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and grant compliance.
- Proficiency with accounting and HR software (QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, ADP, Paychex, etc.).
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and team-building capabilities.
- Commitment to the organizations mission and to serving the community with integrity and compassion.
