The Project Cost Accountant role focused on supporting a project in accounting and finance-related functions. Each project runs like a small business, with the Project Cost Accountant concentrated on critical tasks such as cost control, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, human capital management, and compliance. This position will become skilled at executing processes and utilizing tools related to different types of cost and revenue components such as labor, equipment, materials, and subcontracts. The Project Cost Accountant will be an integral part of the month-end close-out process. This position requires work performed in a dynamic, diverse, and fast-paced team environment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Reviews and understands prime contract and change orders, including insurance, taxes, payment terms, and labor laws
  • Follow system controls to ensure data integrity.
  • Monitor project budgets, track billable hours and expenses, and ensure proper project costing.
  • Assist in preparation of project cash flow and forecast reports to meet project budget milestones and track expenditures.
  • Assist in preparation and review of weekly submission of subcontractor compliance for payment releases.
  • Coordinate with project managers to ensure billing milestones and deadlines are met.
  • Create and maintain spreadsheets utilized by the accounting team for project costs, revenue forecasting and project completion.
  • Provide regular project financial status reports, including actual vs. budget analysis for each project as assigned.
  • Reconcile project accounts and resolve discrepancies related to project billing and expenses as assigned.
  • Maintain project-related records, contracts, and documentation, ensuring compliance with company policies and client agreements.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial statements and audits related to project financials.
  • Assist in preparation of financial performance, variables analysis and cost allocation reports for senior management.
  • Support management in completing special projects, ad-hoc reporting and analysis requests, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Recognizes the importance of being a team player by adapting to project needs and helping in other areas as needed
  • Fosters relationships with the Operations team and shows a willingness to learn about the work
  • Works with sensitive information with discretion to maintain confidentiality and security and ensure compliance with privacy policies and regulations.
  • Cross train with other Accounting Team functions providing backup, as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational, time management skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong ability to multitask and prioritize assigned tasks to meet tight deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in project accounting, with a focus on billing and invoicing, preferably within the construction industry.
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, IFRS, and project accounting principles.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective client and team collaboration.
  • Working knowledge of City/State/federal funded projects and compliance reporting.
  • Familiarity with compliance requirements and regulatory standards in the construction industry.

Physical Demands

  • Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity.
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands.
  • Occasional lifting (up to 15 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying.
