Global Language Strategies, a business headquartered in the Washington DC metropolitan region, is currently seeking a professional freelance translator, editor, and/or transcriber to translate, edit, and/or transcribe legal documents between English and Kinyarwanda.
Job Duties: Kinyarwanda English
- Provide accurate translation of documents and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from Kinyarwanda to English and vice versa.
- Edit audio transcriptions with slang and idioms (Kinyarwanda to English).
- Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language.
- Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.
- Translate and/or transcribe following the government client’s style guides and quality standards.
- Use domain-specific terminology.
- Review and certify the quality of other translators’ work, as needed.
- Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio.
- Abide by a code of ethics when performing transcription and translation work.
Minimum Qualifications:
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance Moderate Level.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- At least 3 years’ experience in translating and/or editing between English and a foreign language.
- At least 3 years’ experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription.
- Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as SDL Trados.
