Bathurst Resources is New Zealand’s largest coal-specialist mining company. We produce over 2.2 million tonnes of coal each year and proudly employ over 550 people. About 80 percent of our production is used for steel making of which one third is used by local Kiwi steel producers. Our high-quality, thermal-grade coal fuels are used to help drive the engines of many iconic food and dairy businesses.

The Stockton Opencast Mine is located close to the coast on a plateau in the Buller coalfield, 35 km north of Westport. This is one of New Zealand’s largest mines with a long history of coal production and produces high value coal for export to the world’s leading steel makers.

The Role

Are you a skilled Open Pit Drill and Blast Engineer with a focus on safety and optimisation? We're looking for a key team member to plan, design, and oversee the execution of all drilling and blasting activities within our open-pit mining operations. This position is essential in ensuring our mining practices are safe, efficient, and optimised for cost and performance.

Reporting to the Senior Mining Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing detailed blast designs and drilling patterns using geological and geotechnical data.
  • Coordinating and supervising all drilling and blasting activities to align with operational plans and strict safety protocols.
  • Analysing blast performance and using modelling software to recommend improvements for fragmentation and cost efficiency.

The Ideal Applicant Will Have

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and experience in a Mining or Quarrying role.
  • A strong understanding of blast design principles and explosives handling.
  • Experience with blast modelling software and analytical tools.
  • A firm commitment to safety and environmental best practices.
  • The desire to collaborate effectively with mine planning, geotechnical, and operational teams.
