How You’ll Make An Impact

The Managing Editor of Press Play reports to the VP, Talk Programming and will lead the daily editorial direction and production of KCRW’s signature daily destination for discussions about news and culture. The show connects with a committed and curious audience that relies on Madeleine Brand as their guide to news, ideas, arts, entertainment, food and many other topics. You’ll ensure the show is always tackling the timeliest topics with the sharpest angles, most interesting guests and highest editorial standards.

Responsibilities include overseeing the daily production of the show from start to finish, working closely with the host on the direction of the show, managing and mentoring a team of producers and working with other teams across KCRW that collaborate with Press Play to ensure its success. You’ll also work with management and teams across KCRW to find new ways for audiences to engage with the show.

Here’s What You’ll Do

  • Oversee a team of producers, coordinating between them, the host, and technical directors or engineers to ensure successful production and execution of daily live show
  • Maintain team’s work schedule
  • Run daily editorial meetings and prep and utilize daily show planning documents
  • Make short and long-term assignments and track the progress of those assignments in order to maintain the show’s programming calendar and future content
  • Coordinate with News Editor and VP, Talk Programming to ensure reporters, fellows, producers and interns contribute consistently to Press Play
  • Edit scripts
  • Assign Senior Producers to edit scripts when necessary
  • Oversee recorded and live broadcast interviews, giving edit suggestions in coordination with show host, especially with tight turnaround and newsmaker interviews
  • QC recorded interviews and other audio to approve for broadcast, or assign this task to production staff as needed
  • Ensure proper digital publishing of each show
  • Direct the live show when necessary
  • Assist VP, Talk Programming in future planning coordination with other teams, including digital editorial and social

Here’s What You’ll Bring

  • Minimum of 7 years in broadcast news programming, including live production
  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience
  • Writing and editing for multiple platforms, including audio and web
  • Strong editorial judgment, knowledge of journalistic ethics and devotion to accuracy
  • Basic audio editing skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

Preferred Skill

  • Experience in public radio
  • Degree in journalism or related field
  • Knowledge of ProTools and Dalet production software
