Responsible for coordinating and implementing Quality Assurance initiatives and Infection Control programs. Adheres to established regulatory policies and procedures including, but not limited to, OSHA, DC, and other federal and state guidelines. Maintains and educates staff on Center’s policies and procedures. Plans, organizes, implements, directs and evaluates the facility education program for nursing assistants in compliance with federal state and location regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Infection Control

  • Directs the work of employees

  • Enforces center policies with authority to issue progressive counseling as needed

  • Participates in training programs and assists in orientation of new staff

  • Tracks and trends center infections utilizing policy and procedures related to infection control

  • Prepares reports related to infection control and submits reports to Director of Nursing monthly or as directed

  • Assists in the development, revision and implementation of all infection control programs

  • Provides in-service education to all staff regarding all aspects of infection control

  • Interfaces with Pharmacy and laboratory to trend infections and reduce incident rates

  • Participates with clinical at Risk Committee and acts as a resource regarding residential clinical management

  • Performs chart audits, under direction of Director of Nursing to assure regulatory compliance

  • Attends Quality Assurance Meeting, maintains QA reports for facility

  • Examines Quality Indicators monthly and develops action plan to address flagged areas, with or as designated by ADON/DON

  • Works with Director of Nursing on monthly A/I reports and develops preventatives action plans related to falls and injuries

  • Attends all clinical meetings, Safety, QA and staff meetings as directed

  • Participates and handles all on-call responsibilities as requested

  • Initiates and audits infection control process

  • Complies with laws and regulations applicable to position and acts in accordance with center’s code of conduct and acceptable standards of practice

  • Treats all residents, visitors and staff with courtesy

  • Performs physical activities including standing, lifting (up to 60 pounds unassisted), bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and twisting

  • Works overtime, holidays and weekend hours as scheduled

  • Follows center dress and hygiene policies.

  • Knows and follows facility rules

  • Demonstrates proper use of equipment and reports equipment needs or repairs

  • Follows facility smoking policies

  • Reports and documents any incidents of residents, staff or visitors to the appropriate facility personnel

  • Reports all hazardous conditions/equipment to Director of Nursing

  • Performs duties, which may include transportation of resident, as assigned in facility disaster plan

  • Uses required protective equipment

  • Follows infection control standards, policies and procedures

  • Knows resident rights. Helps the resident exercise and/or protect their rights

  • Reports resident complaints to Director of Nursing/Social Services

  • Maintains confidentiality of resident information

  • Contacts physician and receives physician orders; transcribes physician orders accurately and assures follow up as indicated

  • Assists with Medicaid certifications for ancillary treatments – therapy, psychology, etc. Interfaces with Social Services to complete these certifications

  • Coordinates facility TB/Exposure Control Program

  • Coordinates compliance with OSHA Hepatitis B Program

  • Coordinates immunizations for all residents and staff, including Flu, Pneumonia, and Varicella vaccinations

  • Performs other duties as directed by Director of Nursing/Administrator

  • Participates in marketing events

  • Other duties as assigned

Nursing Education

  • Plans, implements, directs and evaluates the education program in the facility based on identified resident needs, nursing assistant needs, other staff needs, federal state and local regulations

  • Evaluates resident and staff needs, and provides the Administrator and Director of Nursing with comprehensive recommendations concerning the education needs of the nursing staff

  • Interprets and implements established facility policies, procedures, and regulations

  • Supervises and evaluates nursing assistant conformance to facility policies, procedures and regulations

  • Plans and provides the Administrator and Director of Nursing with an annual schedule of education programs

  • Plans, schedules and posts monthly calendar of education programs in a timely manner

  • Maintains current education records of classes conducted, attendance and clinical performance of each nursing assistant

  • Maintains an education profile for each nursing assistant, listing each class attended, date, time period and evaluation of performance

  • Maintains records for nursing assistant current certifications, expiration dates and other required records

  • Prepares lesson plans containing objectives, course content, method of instruction and method of evaluation for each class scheduled and completed

  • Supervises classroom and clinical activities of nursing assistants

  • Manages the approved education program and submits approval forms as required by the state agency

  • Submits in writing any program changes to appropriate regulatory agency

  • Continually assesses the education program to assure implementation of the approved program

  • Accepts assigned duties in a cooperative manner

  • Implements education programs on all tours of duty on an ongoing basis

  • Participates in the employee evaluation process by providing attendance records and observation of nursing assistants performance to the Director of Nursing

  • Assumes Quality Assurance duties as assigned

  • Consistently works cooperatively with residents, nursing supervisor, other licensed nurses, nursing assistants, physicians, families, consultants, community agencies and ancillary service personnel

  • Consistently operates the education department program within the budget guidelines

  • Observes and teaches the facility infection control policies and procedures to nursing assistants

  • Observes and teaches the facility safety rules to nursing assistants

  • Observes, teaches and follows the facility Residents’ Rights policies and procedures

  • Assumes responsibility for obtaining continuing education relating to the care of the geriatric resident and nursing education

  • Possess a current license to practice in Kentucky as an RN

  • Ability to manage and supervise

  • Ability to make independent decisions

  • Previous experience in QA and/or Infection Control preferred

  • Must have CPR training

  • 1 to 3 years’ supervisor experience strongly preferred

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English

  • Meets all health requirements as required by law

  • Ability to relate positively, effectively and appropriately with residents, families, community members, volunteers and other facility staff
