Incumbent performs a full range of housekeeping duties within the medical center that may required strenuous physical labor and strict adherence to aseptic cleaning procedures. Incumbent may be rotated through or assigned to any areas or approved tours of duty. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining assigned to any of the approved tours of duty. The incumbent is responsible for maintain assigned area in a sanitary manner though adhering to current procedures/policies and work schedule.

The duties of the Housekeeping Aid may include, but are not limited to the following
- Scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors using heavy (industrial-type) powered scrubbers and buffers. Wash walls, using powered wall washing machine. Vacuum clean rugs, using heavy (industrial-type) vacuum cleaners. Adjust, clean, and oil these machines, and change brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachments on them. Wash and replace Venetian blinds, and wash ceiling fixtures and room partitions, using ladders and scaffolds. Move heavy furniture, supplies, and equipment.
- Do the full range of cleaning duties in an assigned area (building, hospital ward, etc.), following general instructions on the work to be done. Use various preparations to clean and maintain linoleum, wood, marble, and various kinds of floor, wall, and ceiling surfaces.
- Remove stains from a variety of surfaces, using chemicals and cleaning solutions. Occasionally work on ladders and scaffolds to change light bulbs, replace venetian blinds, wash walls, etc. Run powered cleaning equipment, cleans and oils it, and changes brushes and accessories.
- In shops, keep an area clean and in order. Sweep and wet mop floor, and remove oil, hydraulic fluid, grease, and other spilled liquids. Move heavy boxes, crates, parts, or other obstacles in order to clean up the area, and pick up scraps of wood, metal and other material. Remove scrap and trash cans from area to central pickup point. Wipe benches, machinery, etc., as directed.
- Incumbent consistently provides courteous service to all Veterans and their families, treating them with dignity and respect. Incumbent is part of a medical center team, which displays and attitude to caring and shows respect to everyone in the work environment.
Work schedule: Rotating Shifts 06:00 am-3:30 pm / 3:30 pm-11:30 pm / 10:00 pm- 06:00 am.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.
