What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Chemistry Technologist join a diverse, high-performing team responsible for synthesis, formulation, and processing of energetic materials in support of a variety of national security applications.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Perform energetic materials synthesis, formulation, and processing.

  • Perform basic characterization of energetic materials.

  • Provide laboratory stewardship such as environment, safety and health (ES&H) and security responsibilities, maintaining work-control documentation, managing property, coordinating activities with other laboratories.

Qualifications We Require

  • B.S. in Chemistry, Materials Science or a related field plus 5 or more years of experience in the area of synthesis, formulation or reprocessing of organic materials

  • Demonstrated experience planning, conducting, and documenting high-quality, high-rigor scientific studies

  • Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • M.S. in Chemistry, Materials Science or a related field.

  • Formal training and knowledge of explosives; specifically their chemical, mechanical and physical properties.

  • Excellent oral communication and technical writing skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently

  • Willingness to be trained and qualified to work with explosives and other energetic materials Well-developed interpersonal skills and able to work across dynamic teams.

  • Active DOE-Q clearance

About Our Team

The Energetic Materials Department (Organization 02555) is an integral part of the Explosives Technologies Group (ETG) at Sandia National Laboratories. The Energetic Materials Department is responsible for the development and characterization of energetic materials (explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics) for a variety of national security applications. Activities include chemical and physical analysis, accelerated aging, compatibility evaluations, materials research/development, and anomaly investigation. Other research activities include the development of novel explosives detection systems, development of new analytical methodologies, and advanced manufacturing of energetic materials.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
